What Is Wedding Insurance and Do I Need It?

What Is Wedding Insurance and Do I Need It?

Today on The Bride Link, we're talking all about wedding insurance and why you should consider buying it! But first, grab your free copy of our Wedding Day Emergency Kit List, to help plan for everything you'll need for a wedding day emergency!

What is wedding insurance? Do I need? What does it cover? You've come to the right place for answers to your wedding insurance questions! We've gathered a list of wedding insurance FAQs to help you decide. We recommend purchasing insurance for your wedding for several reasons, but most importantly because some things are just out of your control. No level of planning or preparation can prepare you for a wedding venue that gets catches fire the night before your wedding. How about a wedding venue that suddenly closes its doors with no notice because they're bankrupt? You've already paid in full and no one is answering your calls or emails. How about a viral pandemic that requires everyone to stay home and gather in small groups only? You may assume the venue will automatically refund you, no questions asked. Unfortunately, most of the time, they just won't. It's why we recommend paying for services with a credit card. A credit card allows you to dispute a charge with your credit card company, who usually side with the client and not the vendor. Wedding insurance helps ensure you're mad whole should unforeseen circumstance cause you to cancel your celebration at the last minute.

Wedding insurance can also cover you should some get hurt while on-site at your event. Accidents happen all the time, and if the venue is underinsured, you'll be the next target for anyone who trips and falls over a cord and claims they've sustained irrevocable bodily damage.

Should You Get Wedding Insurance?

  1. What is wedding insurance? Wedding insurance covers the couple on variables they cannot control. Example: if your wedding venue goes out of business and they cannot refund you the deposit you put down. This is when your wedding insurance goes into effect and protects you from events as such.
  2. Why get wedding insurance? Example: it’s your wedding day in the middle of the winter and overnight there’s a storm that makes your venue inaccessible. With wedding insurance, you can push your date back and not pay a penny more of what you already did.
  3. How much does wedding insurance cost? Basic insurance plans cover loss of photos, rings, attire, and videos. Pricing usually starts around $155-$550. General liability which covers up to $1,000,000 for accidents usually costs around $185.
  4.  Do I Need It? I would talk to each of your vendors and see how well they are covered. Ask them for a copy of their policy and weigh out your options. If they already have insurance to cover them you don’t want to get extra to overlap what you've already paid for.
  5. When should you get wedding insurance? ASAP! You don’t want to put a deposit down on a venue and then in a few months, a flood completely submerges it underwater. You won’t get your deposit back unless you have insurance to cover you.
  6. What does wedding insurance cover? Wedding insurance will cover the site, vendors, weather, sickness, accidents, and key people. For instance, insurance will cover if you were no longer able to have your event there for any reason. For the weather, it will cover incidents such as any weather disaster that would prevent the bride/groom from having their wedding there. This may also include wedding flowers and catering.
  7. What does wedding insurance NOT cover? If either the bride or groom gets cold feet. Jewelry may also be excluded and may require you to purchase an additional policy.

These are just some of the top reasons to consider purchasing insurance for your wedding. Countless other scenarios are possible, and if you've invested a substantial amount in your wedding day, a few hundred more dollars to cover the unexpected is worth it 100% of the time.
