Vendor Spotlight: Mott's Floral Design

View More Photos

As a couple plans their wedding, there is a typical checklist they will follow. On that list is deciding what flowers will decorate the ceremony and reception sites. Recently, wedding floral design has become a way to elevate your wedding day, not an aspect you need to check off while planning your big day. We spoke with Mott’s Floral Design and discussed their floral business, new trends for weddings, and what couples can expect when they book with Mott’s.

Based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Mott’s has been in business for three years and serves the surrounding East Tennessee area. Before their current incarnation, the owners owned another shop and were involved in the wedding industry for 20 years.

What brought you into the wedding industry?

Weddings can take on a theme and level of design that you do not find in everyday floral work. They are intriguing and individually detailed to each event. That level of creativity and design led us to the wedding industry in the early 1980s, and it is what keeps us in the industry today.

What is a lesson you have learned since being in the wedding industry?

Styles and trends are ever-changing. No two weddings are alike, and a new style is always on the horizon.  To remain competitive in the market, educating yourself on the latest trends and having the foresight to offer these new trends to brides is certainly a constant learning process.

What is your favorite part about the wedding industry?

The level of design and ability to freely create are top notch! We LOVE to hear the phrases "use your own judgment" and "I'm leaving design detail up to you." Sure, a good portion of brides have inspiration photos to copy as a near replica, and there is a level of design freedom welcomed for those instances. However, to freely create based solely off of the color scheme, feel, and theme of the ceremony and reception is what makes the job so much fun!

What is your favorite part about a wedding in general?

Professionally, it's being able to step back and see a wonderful collaboration from all vendors that worked tirelessly to produce the clients’ dream wedding. Yes, we may be partial to the florals, but seeing the event as a whole come together can be a phenomenal feeling!

What makes you/your business different?

Our staff! We are a family business whose age and design knowledge span decades. With ages ranging from mid-twenties to nearing sixty, each of us has a design style that's sure to fit any floral need.

Tell us about your favorite couples, weddings or projects.

One of our favorite weddings we did was Morgan and Dylan's wedding this past fall at The Barn at Williams Manor. Morgan told us what she envisioned for her big day and allowed us to have creative freedom to make it beautiful within her budget. We used beautiful King Protea flowers (that came from South Africa!) as the focal point and inspiration of the floral design.

Are you seeing any trends in what couples are wanting for their wedding day when they meet with you?

Currently, people are loving the whimsical garden bouquet look. We have also seen an increase for the traditional cascading bouquet.

What do you wish every couple knew before they walked in your doors for a consult?

Quality fresh florals aren't cheap! For example, anyone can walk into Kroger, Sam's Club, or even Costco to purchase bulk florals for wedding use. However, the employees may or may not be able to tell you origin of those florals or how to care for them.

At Mott's, we utilize local wholesale houses as well as farm-direct shipping for all of our fresh florals.  We process our incoming flowers with a series of preservatives, tempered water, appropriate acclimation and cooler time, and we continue that cycle of care until florals are utilized.  Long story short, we take great pride in our florals and handle every bunch with care.

What piece of advice do you have for couples planning their wedding?

Enjoy the planning time!  Sample the cakes, dance in the venue, smell the flowers, do it all together! Do have a game plan and timeline in place. Check the items off your list one by one and don't sweat the small stuff. *insert heart eye emoji*

What can couples expect when they meet and book with you?

We offer a complimentary one-hour consultation to discuss all details.  Everything from personal florals, ceremony decor, reception, and arbor rentals will be covered. Should the couple choose to select Mott's as their florist, we require a minimal non-refundable deposit to "Save the Date.”
