Vendor Spotlight: Sweet Tea Productions

Wedding Pro Spotlight: Sweet Tea Productions

Knoxville Wedding Videographer

After turning a childhood hobby of capturing video into a rewarding career in TV news and sports, Tammy Akard of Sweet Tea Productions is now using her passion for telling peoples’ stories in a thriving wedding video business. Though it might seem like an unusual transition, all it took was one wedding she was asked to film for a friend before Tammy knew that filming weddings was a natural fit.

Simply put, Sweet Tea Production tells love stories. Whether they make you laugh or cry (or both!), by the end of the film, you will feel like you know the couple. “It’s an honor to be right next to the bride and groom during their special day,” Tammy says. “I love capturing their love story and preserving all the memories. The wedding day is a blur for most couples, that is why they hire me!”

When Tammy isn’t filming or editing, you can find her on a ball field or court somewhere, coaching volleyball or supporting her four kids. Her husband often shoots alongside her, as well as a number of second shooters. She’s a people person, and loves meeting with couples face to face over a coffee to get to know them before the wedding, rather than doing all communication over email. “After all, I’m hanging around wit them for most of their wedding day!”

That face to face meeting is how Tammy begins to plan the film for each couple. By asking lots of questions, she can quickly get a feel of what they want in their film, whether that includes an interview segment, letter readings or very minimal dialogue at all. Of course, these questions are what help her build a relationship with her clients - it’s important that they like Tammy just as much as they like her work!

When it comes to hiring a wedding videographer, their body of work is very important.

“I believe experience is key. You really get what you pay for.”

Tammy encourages couples to make sure a potential videographer knows their equipment and can capture audio. Don’t be afraid to talk to other vendors and ask about their reputation. What are they like to work with on the wedding day? “Most importantly,” she says, “you have to like their work. If you don't like the style of video on their website, then go with someone else.”

With all of the jaw-dropping scenery we have in Tennessee, it’s not surprising that Tammy loves working in the Volunteer State. Aside from the beauty, though, the thing she likes best about working and living in Tennessee is the people. She loves the types of brides we get in Tennessee, who keep faith and family at the centre of their weddings.

Encouraged by the growing desire for wedding video, Sweet Tea Productions is noticing that in 2017, more and more brides see the value in hiring a videographer, and get excited about hearing their vows over again or watching their first look on the big screen.

After watching so many weddings through a camera lens, Tammy encourages couples to make their wedding unique by putting their own personality into their wedding, whether it’s through a very personal ceremony, creative decorations, or a themed-style wedding.

While you can see many of her videos on her website, I also encourage you to watch more on her Vimeo channel here

For couples planning their wedding, Tammy has some awesome advice:

“Don't compare your wedding to others and especially not to Pinterest! Be you.

“Plan your heart out, but keep your fiancee as the number one part of this entire wedding planning process. Focus on the marriage itself. Get pre-marital counseling. It's not about the big party, it's about that person that you are spending the rest of your life with… and I want you watching your wedding film on your 20th anniversary
