Sequoyah Entertainment Vendor Spotlight

It’s always fun to chat with members from The Bride Link vendor list and a few weeks ago I sat down with Jason from Sequoyah Entertainment to discover more about the man behind the DJ booth. He is known in the local industry by his big smile and infectious energy and as we sat in his downtown Knoxville office, I learned some interesting and fun facts about his DJ business!

Jason started out like many DJ’s, performing at small house parties for friends.  He was studying at the University of Tennessee at the time, concentrating in electronic media, and providing entertainment just clicked with his personality. He transitioned into performing at local events and eventually took a job with WIVK, a local radio station, for the summer.

A big moment in his career occurred when he decided to head out on a two-week trip to Las Vegas. His intention was to stay for two weeks to check out the entertainment scene and then head back home to Knoxville.  At the advice of a college instructor, he sent his resume out to talent agencies in hopes to gain some entertainment interview experience during his trip.  Two days into the trip he was hired by Las Vegas Entertainment loading trucks through the week and began to work events on the weekends.  That two-week trip turned into an entire summer where he worked learning the ropes of the Las Vegas entertainment industry.

He worked his way through Las Vegas that summer and picked up some notable gigs. Dana White hired him for a birthday party for his children, he performed at events hosted by Mike Tyson, and also opened for the Ying Yang Twins and Skrillex.

Q: How does someone who performs at events in Las Vegas transition to become a popular wedding DJ in the southeast?

A:  Las Vegas gave me the industry experience to work creatively with couples.  I love the personalization aspect of weddings and that was the one thing that led me to pursue Sequoyah Entertainment.  I am a well-rounded DJ with many different experiences that prepared me for weddings.  I have experienced every scenario possible at many different types of events and nothing will startle me or throw me off track in executing an event.

Q:  What services do you offer to engaged couples?

A:  I am a total service provider for events and can accommodate any type of celebration or ceremony.  From lighting design and custom monograms to customized playlists, I specialize in designing events that make a clients' vision for their dream wedding come true.  I approach weddings with the same amount of detail as I did during my radio days; everything is professionally programmed.  Most couples hire me for DJ talent and production services; we cover ceremony, cocktail hour music, and reception music.

Q:  You clearly have a passion for what you do; what made you choose wedding entertainment as a profession?

A:  I really love the personalization aspect of weddings.  The bride and groom trust me to keep the flow of the day going and to create a fun atmosphere for their guests.  I’m hired to be an integral part of the happiest day of a couple’s life and that’s a pretty big deal and one I take very seriously.  I spend hours prepping for each event and pour my heart and soul into delivering exactly what the bride and groom want.

Q:  What goes into preparing for an event?

A:  Depending on the event, I can spend between 10 and 30 hours preparing for the evening.  My planning time always exceeds my performance time.   Everything that I do at weddings is by design and I work to truly connect with each one of my couples.  I meet with my couples extensively and work to design an event that captures their personalities.  I don’t use templates or worksheets and instead focus on their vision for the event and create a customized plan for each couple.

Q:  What sets you apart from other DJ’s and entertainment agencies in Knoxville?

A:  My personality makes me different.  While playing music is an important part of what I do, it is absolutely not the only thing.  My job is to control the flow of the reception and ensure that everything is executed properly.  To do this, I work closely with planners, day of coordinators, and venue directors to make sure that our schedules line up when the big day arrives and the couple’s dream of a great reception is realized.

Jason still has a few dates available for 2017 and is also currently booking into 2018!  You can check out his Bride Link Profile here.
