Knoxville Wedding Photographer

It was such a pleasure to be able to sit down with Knoxville wedding photographer, Suzanne McNeil, owner of Suzanne McNeil Photography and learn about her passion for weddings, photography, and people in general! Enjoy this fun interview below to learn more about the person behind the business!

Tell me how your passion for weddings and photography started?

My passion for photography started as a kid. I remember having a Kodac disc camera and taking crazy pictures of anything and everything. It wasn’t until a friend gave me her old DSLR camera that I started to really excel in my passion for photography. I don’t think my friend will ever know how much that gift changed my life. Over the years, I learned how to use it and enjoyed photographing my friends and family.

My passion for photographing weddings happened somewhat by accident. One of my friends wanted me to shoot her wedding, and it was the first wedding I had every photographed. I was so scared, but I researched as much as I could about how to shoot a wedding and stepped out and did it! I’m so glad I did, because now, weddings are some of my favorite events to photograph!

What is your favorite part about a wedding (the part that gets you in the gut every time?)

I have two favorite parts about a wedding…

The mother son dance gives me goose bumps every time!  It may be because I have three boys of my own, and I can only imagine how she much feel.

I also love the moment right before the bride walks down the aisle. It’s usually one of the only moments that the bride and her father are alone the entire day, and I feel like a fly on the wall. I don’t ask them to pose, but I simply capture them in the moment.

What is your favorite part about working with brides/couples?

Unlike family portraits that are usually chaotic and require a lot of posing and instruction, capturing couples who are in love is effortless. They have a natural chemistry that is so fun to capture on camera.

I especially enjoy building a relationship with the bride. I enjoy being there for her on the wedding day to fluff her gown, fix her hair, and do anything else she needs in order to feel beautiful and relaxed in front of the camera.

What makes you unique?

I am definitely a people person, and I have a gift of being able to ease stress and chaos that often occurs at weddings.

Gosh darn it people like me! (laughs) I am easy going but can take charge when needed in a non-pushy way.

I think it is super important for a wedding photographer to be a people person. You are with them all day, so it’s important to get to know your photographer and trust them as you would a friend.

When you don’t have a camera in your hand, what do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy rounding up the kids and my husband and going for a bike ride on the greenways in Knoxville, or if we’re up for a long bike ride, we love the Virginia Creeper trail.

I’m growing a love for cooking. Homemade soups have been my favorite recipes lately.

Tell me a fun/random fact about yourself?

I’m 6ft tall but terrible at basketball. I definitely don’t need a ladder when I shoot weddings!

How would you describe your style?

My style is clean and colorful with lots of natural lighting. I also like clean edits with little added effects. My goal is to create photos that are timeless, which for me, means, no matter what the decade, my clients will look back at their photos and still think they are just as beautiful as they did when they were young.

Tell me about a memorable/unforgettable moment at a wedding?

I photographed an intimate wedding on a sailboat once and it had only 8 guests. It was such a close quarters, that it created a lot of intimate moments. I had never been on a sailboat before and I had all these fears about shooting on a moving boat. However, it was overall such an amazing experience. The couple had started restoring the boat when they just met which made it that much more special!
