3 Napking Folding Techniques

I have always wanted to know how to fold a napkin like all the elegant restaurants do. Every time I go to a nice event, I always look at the napkins and think how hard it looks to recreate such beautiful designs. So this project is dedicated to everyone that has no origami skills but has always wanted to fold a napkin like the experts! Kate Spears, owner at Southern Belle Simple, was the perfect etiquette expert to help me with this project. She chose three napkin folding designs that fit a variety of event types – the Fleur de Lis, a French Pleat, and a Bow Tie Fold. All three of these are super easy napkin folding techniques that anybody can do! Enjoy, and comment below with questions!

Fleur de Lis Napkin Fold

The Fleur de Lis napkin fold is the perfect design for an elegant affair. I see this style at many dinner events and restaurants. We used a glass for this design as a container and pedestal for the napkin.

Step 1: Fold your napkin in half long ways then again across to make a square.

Step 2:Rotate the top right corner of the square counter clockwise so it is now pointing to the left (follow the yellow heart in the photos.) Then, fold the napkin in half from top to bottom.

Step 3:Fold the first layer of the napkin in an accordion fold. Flip over the napkin holding the accordion fold in place, and repeat the accordion fold on the other side of the napkin.

Step 4:Holding the accordion folds in place, fold the napkin in half and place it in a glass. Separate the layers of the napkin to look like wings. And there you have it! You have just created a Fleur de Lis Napkin Fold!

French Pleat Napkin Fold

This fold is perfect for any event! It conforms to any style, so we used a colorful pattern for the napkin. My favorite part about this design is that there is a little flap that is created in the center of the fold that can hold either silverware, a menu, or a name card. Again, this complicated looking design is so easy!

Step 1:

Fold the top and bottom of your napkin so they meet in the center.

Step 2:

Fold the corners of each end to make a point.

Step 3:

Fold the points so they meet in the center of your napkin. Then flip the square over.

Step 4:

Fold each point of the square into the center of the napkin. Flip over the square and you will see how a flap has formed. That’s it! No too bad right?

Place your silverware or a menu inside the flap to finish off the look.

Bow Tie Napkin Fold

Isn’t this napkin fold adorable! This is the easiest of all three designs to do and perfect for a fun or elegant event. I think a black napkin with a white ribbon would be super elegant for a high class affair while also showing some personality.

Step 1:

Fold your napkin in half. Then fold the bottom of the napkin to the center of the rectangle. Next, fold the top of the napkin over the bottom half. At this point you will have a long rectangle.

Step 2:

Fold the ends of the long rectangle to meet in the center.

Step 3:

Tie a ribbon around the napkin holding the two loose ends together. Tuck any extra ribbon away from view. Flip it over to see the final product!
